$14.3 million one-off payment to La Trobe University

14 May 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga, has welcomed the Rudd Government’s Budget announcement of a $14 million special one-off payment to La Trobe University.

The funding was announced as part of an extra $500 million to Australian universities to help rebuild their infrastructure.

The funding will cover the following priority areas:
  • Information and communications technology
  • Laboratories
  • Libraries and student study spaces
  • Teaching spaces
  • Student amenities
“La Trobe University has offered many students an opportunity to better their chances in life – many of whom were the first in their family to go to university”, Ms Macklin said.

“After eleven years of neglect under the Howard Government, this payment will help La Trobe update and improve their facilities.

“I am very happy that La Trobe is to receive this funding, which will further enhance their reputation as one of Victoria’s best educational facilities.

The Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe Univeristy, Professor Paul Johnson, agrees.

“The renewal funding for universities is very welcome. La Trobe will be able to begin to refurbish the infrastructure of the university, much of which is 30 years old”, Prof. Johnson said.

“It was pleasing to see in the Budget a clear recognition by the Government of the importance of higher education to Australia’s economic and social development. This Budget is clearly the first instalment of the Rudd Government’s promise to deliver an education revolution”, said Prof. Johnson.
