$15 million commitment for the Austin’s Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre

14 May 2008

Fifteen million dollars has been allocated towards the establishment of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre at the Austin Hospital in the first Rudd Government budget.

This honours the pre-election funding commitment made by Kevin Rudd and Jenny Macklin when visiting the Austin last year.

“This is fabulous news for our local area”, Ms Macklin said.

“Local residents have been working hard to help raise money to see the establishment of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre, and this $15 million certainly rewards their hard work and dedication.

“The Austin Hospital is one of Australia’s premier teaching hospitals, and the establishment of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre can only enhance this reputation.

Associate Professor Paul Mitchell, Director of Cancer Services at the Austin, has just returned from the “Walk the Great Wall of China” fundraiser with Olivia Newton-John to raise money for the Cancer Centre.

“I am very excited about this news”, Associate Professor Mitchell said.

“As a result of receiving confirmation of this funding, along with money from the State Government and our own fundraising, we will be able to start on Stage 1 of the development next year.

“I would like to acknowledge Jenny’s fantastic support in helping us achieve our dream”, he said.

“In addition to the $15 million for the Austin, the Rudd Government will also reimburse women who have undergone mastectomies as a result of breast cancer up to $400 for both new and replacement external breast prostheses”, Ms Macklin said.

“$15 million has also been allocated to set up two dedicated prostate cancer research centres.

“Cancer is Australia’s biggest killer, with more than 35,000 deaths and 88,000 people diagnosed every year – the Rudd Labor Government is committed to supporting those who are on the front line fighting this terrible disease.
