Australian Government funds Aurora Community Centre

10 April 2008

The Australian Government has committed $568,000 to establish a community centre for the Aurora Estate in Epping North, to provide the fast growing community with a base for a range of activities and meetings.

This funding was an election commitment and reflects the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to delivering measures that strengthen and expand community facilities.

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, said the Aurora living and learning Centre would be an important hub in one of Victoria’s newest and fastest growing communities.

Harry Jenkins MP said he was delighted to support the Aurora living and learning centre because it is a well thought through proposal with wide community support. He said it is a wonderful example of an innovative outcome following genuine grassroots input. The centre addresses, from the outset, many of the social and cultural challenges of a new community.

Aurora Estate is the largest environmentally sustainable urban development being undertaken in Australia, and will eventually be home to over 25,000 people.

We want the community to have a strong role in guiding the development of the centre and in delivering programs for the community.

The Aurora living and learning centre will be an important community facility and meeting place for the rapidly expanding community.

Activities including craft activities, dancing, seniors’ groups, mothers’ groups, language classes will be offered and there will be meeting rooms available for community and sporting organisations.
