Child care commitment honoured for Hurstbridge

14 May 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga has welcomed the announcement of a new early learning and child care centre for Hurstbridge.

The Rudd Government confirmed the new centre as part of the 2008-09 Budget.

“Last year when I visited Hurstbridge, I announced that a Rudd Labor government would build a new child care centre. We are honouring that commitment”, Ms Macklin said.

“A new child care centre will ease some of the pressure on local families, especially with the Budget commitment to increase the child care tax rebate to 50 per cent of our of pocket child care costs.

Hurstbridge local Paula Knight, mum to 2 year old Zack, is very pleased with the news.

“Zack is currently in family day care and I know of a lot of local families who are on the waiting list as there is no other local child care”, Ms Knight said.

“Having a local child care centre will be great.

Over the next four years, the Government will provide $114.5 million to establish 38 child care centres, including a centre at Hurstbridge. The centres will be operational by 2010.

This measure is the first phase of the Government’s commitment to establish 260 centres on school sites and community land.
