Jenny Macklin reminds parents to collect receipts for education tax refund

2 July 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Member for Jagajaga, reminded local parents to start collecting receipts for their education expenses from today so they can benefit from the new Education Tax Refund, which is payable at the end of the 2008-09 financial year.

“To claim the tax rebate, parents need to collect the receipts for items they purchase as part of their child’s education, such as laptops, computers, textbooks and stationery.”

“Families will then be able to claim a 50 per cent refund to help meet these costs” Ms Macklin said.

The education tax refund will be provided at the following levels:
  • A 50 per cent tax refund of up to $750 in educational expenses for each child at primary school – a maximum refund of $375 per child;
  • A 50 per cent tax refund of up to $1,500 in education expenses for each child at secondary school – a maximum refund of $750 per child.
The rebate will be available to parents that are entitled to Family Tax Benefit Part A, or whose school children receive Youth Allowance or a similar payment.
“Parents understand the value of education and know their kids need to make the most of their schooling to ensure Australia’s future prosperity.”

“This rebate will help parents meet the costs associated with their children’s education, and will help take pressure off the family budget.”
