Local Member writes to Telstra CEO seeking answers

30 January 2008

In response to local concerns about Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) internet availability in the Macleod and Springthorpe area, Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga, has written to Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo seeking a solution to this problem.

Business owners and residents of parts of Macleod and Springthorpe have made it very clear they are unhappy with the dial-up internet service they currently receive.

While business owners can access wireless broadband provider Megalink, this option is not necessarily affordable for every business.

Business owners who have fewer than 20 full-time equivalent staff may be able to receive Australian Broadband Guarantee (ABG) subsidised satellite broadband services.

The ABG Program offers incentive payments to registered broadband providers so that they can connect metro-comparable broadband services to people who do not have access to them.

“This still may not be cost-affective approach for local businesses or for local residents”, Ms Macklin said.

“I have written to Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo asking him to look into this problem and advise me of what possible solutions may be available to local businesses and residents.

If you are having problems accessing broadband in the Macleod area, or would like to know more about accessing the ABG Program, please give Ms Macklin’s office a call on 9459 1411.
