Watsonia Primary School’s new toilets unveiled!

9 May 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga and Colin Brooks MP, State Member for Bundoora, today opened the newly upgraded toilet block and storage facilities at Watsonia Primary School.

The total cost of the project was $180,000, with $130,000 provided by the State Government and an additional $46,000 coming from the Federal Government’s Community Water Grants Scheme and $4,000 from Watsonia Primary.

“I am very pleased that the Brumby State Government provided $130,000 towards the toilet upgrade, paying for the removal of the existing cisterns, floor coverings, walls and ceilings of the toilet block”. Mr Brooks said.

“The children and the community have been looking forward to this upgrade for several years and are thrilled to be taking possession of their new toilet block”, Mr Brooks said.

“I understand the children at Watsonia Primary have taken a great interest in the building works and been following the process carefully.

Jenny Macklin MP is also happy that money from the Federal Government’s Community Water Grants was able to contribute towards this upgrade.

“With the $46,000 coming from Community Water Grants late last year, the school was able to provide water-efficient urinal taps, low flush toilets and rain water tanks to supply water to the toilets”, Ms Macklin said.

“Watsonia Primary has offered yet another great example of a local school leading the way in water conservation”.

Ms Jeanette Martin, Principal of Watsonia Primary, is also happy with the upgrade.

“The rainwater tanks have been plumbed to the toilets and will also provide water to our vegetable garden and then we hope to our oval to assist the grass to recoup”, Ms Martin said.

The upgrade has also improved the comfort of the toilet block, including the addition of new mirrors and safe, non-slip hygienic epoxy flooring.

“I’m told the cubicles in the toilet block are larger and the doors offer more privacy, offering a safe, comfortable area for the children”, Mr Brooks said.
